Virginia Court Data Fields
I have been asked to explain all the fields in the court data posted at VirginiaCourtData.org. Unfortunately, I am not a lawyer and I don’t understand the fields well enough to explain them to anyone. But what I have done is to list the fields and provide simple observations about their values. For fields that are not free-form, I have listed all possible values. I have also included screenshots that show how the data were originally presented. Please do not take any of the information in this post as truth and if you see something you know to be incorrect, let me know.
I’ve added a person_id field to all the criminal cases and created a new dataset with the same criminal case data, but reorganized by defendant. For more on that, jump to Data Quality: Part I — Names.
Circuit Criminal Court Cases
There is one primary table for cases and three child tables — hearings, pleadings, and services. All of the exported data in the files available on VirginiaCourtData.org comes from the primary table, with one exception — each row contains the most recent hearing from the hearings table. If you are interested in all the data in the child tables, please let me know.
The fields found in the data files are listed below. In cases where a field has a limited set of options, those options will be listed in italics. For nearly every field, it is possible for the value to be empty.
